What a privilege to interview author BJ Gallagher about her book “It’s Never Too Late To Be What You Might Have Been: A Guide To Getting The Life You Love.” From her own experience of negative self-talk (and we all know something about that, right?) BJ had an AHA moment. She determined to turn off the old tapes and affirm for herself that it wasn’t too late to have what she wanted. During our discussion we talked about how we can learn to know what we want by following the inner resonance that becomes our guiding light, beckoning us in the direction the hunger of our soul wants us to go.
Sometimes when we listen to ourselves and choose the path less traveled, naysayers offer discouragement rather than cheers. Giving ourselves permission to be the authors of our own lives, even when friends or experts have a different take on what we might do, adds to our confidence. We become more free and more responsible. We also learn to live with mistakes and know they are seldom cast in stone.
What keeps us from taking risks and making changes? FEAR. Fear of failure, shame, embarrassment all keep us in imagined safety right where we are. BJ and I laughed at a book we both love even though we haven’t read it called “Feel The Fear and Do It Anyway.” The title says it all. Can you make a commitment to yourself to live more in that place of feeling the fear and doing it anyway? A second thing we can do as we reinvent ourselves is to change our self-talk. By rooting out the negative messages and replacing them with mantras that are closer to the truth, we can up our vibration and be more expansive in our actions.
