What an extraordinary thing to do! To declare to your oppressor that you will no longer accept oppression!
Have you considered making your own Declaration of Independence from some oppressor you live with? For many of us, our biggest oppressor is alive and well within our own thoughts, habits, and patterns. You know what I mean, that inner oppressor who urges you to eat the rest of the gelato in the freezer even though you aren’t a bit hungry. That inner oppressor who is absolutely convinced that once you own that red Mercedes convertible you will live happily ever after. That inner oppressor who plays tapes of negative thoughts when you are trying to sleep at night.
Hey, there’s nothing wrong with eating sweets and buying luxury items. When we act from choice, we feel good about what we do. When we are in the grips of the oppressor, we feel guilt or shame rather than pleasure. Self-mastery develops as we look for where our inner oppressor lurks and meet it with calm, loving resolve. In this way we gain insight and take action in ways that will lead us to true freedom and happiness.
