Today on Voices For Healing talk radio my guest, Loretta Sparks, a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist, talked about her work using Energy Psychology. She is experienced with a technique called Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT). Loretta shared that we are energetic bodies and EFT is based on the same understanding of energy as acupuncture and acupressure and uses tapping on strategic locations to move energy in the body. By tapping on 14 different points on the body and hands while focusing on a problem or disturbance, the body is encouraged to relax and allow a natural healing to occur.
While understanding and insight help with lots of issues, tapping can supplement talk therapy on a deep level and can heal trauma held deeply within the body. Loretta shared a personal procedure process in which clients write down ten negative things they remember for each decade of life, such that a 40 year old would come up with a list of 40 things. Rate each item on the list in intensity and begin to use the EFT process to let go of the remaining physical and emotional attachments to these memories. Once you learn the tapping process you can practice tapping five times a day for 3 minutes, even when you have no particular concern at that moment. This helps the body to let go of whatever known or unknown tensions it may be holding. Loretta was quick to point out that EFT does not cure anything. Rather by tapping and focusing, the body can relax and let go of whatever is being held. She also let us know that while people may use tapping for small issues without the support of a therapist, tapping is best used along with therapy.
