It’s that time of February when stores are filled with roses and chocolate, restaurants are booked months in advance, and thoughts of love fill the air and media. Quick, just for fun, make a mental list of all the people you love. We will return to your list in a bit.
Valentine’s Day was named for two Christian martyrs of the 4th and 5th centuries. Originally a feast day, in 18th century England February 14 became associated with lovers honoring each other with flowers and sweets.
One of the greatest love stories in Greek mythology is the tale of Eros (Cupid) and Psyche, a deep love story about overcoming obstacles and arriving in a place of sacred love. Too long to detail here, those of you who want to read the myth can do so right here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cupid_and_Psyche#Story
The story of Cupid and Psyche is a story of self-discovery and union with the beloved and isn’t that what psychotherapy is all about?! In psychotherapy we meet our obstacles, overcome some and learn to live with others and ultimately gain more love, acceptance, and compassion. No wonder I love the myth!
Now, back to your list of people you love. Are you on it?
Wishing you more love in your life every day of the year!
Sending you virtual hearts and roses,
Cathy
