“I have come to see that there is good in every situation. Sometimes we just have to look for it.” Kayla Mueller
While she was imprisoned in Syria by the Islamic State last spring, Kayla Mueller wrote these words in a letter to her family. Wise beyond her years and deeply compassionate, Kayla’s writing is that of an amazingly awake and alive young woman.
Stories like Kayla’s lift all of us up. If one human can see the good in every situation, we all can. If one person can see The Holy in the suffering of fellow humans, we all can. If one person can use darkness to bring more light into the world, we all can.
The enormously compassionate hearts of people like Kayla warm my own heart in these cold days of February. Take a moment to reflect on her words:
I suppose like us all, I am learning how to deal with the suffering of the world inside myself.
I believe that if we can’t handle learning about the darkest places of our world, they will turn into the darkest places in us.
And similarly, the dark places in us darken the world when we can’t handle learning how to deal with our own shadow.
What corner of darkness are you ready to shine a little light into?
